Iceland Volcanoes
The Impact on Harvest and Winter Fuel
On May 21, Iceland's Grimsvotn volcano exploded, spewing ash and chemicals 9-12 miles high. This is large enough to change the climate of the Northern Hemisphere. It will produce cooler temperatures in fall and winter, affecting harvests and fuel consumption. There are short-term and long-term weather events that will present both challenges and buying opportunities. How will this volcano eruption affect you?
The eruptions height means that the eruption is going to eventually leave the global atmosphere. Because of this, there will be international environmental affect now, and later in the year from the volcanic ash. For current conditions, the ash plume is going to start hitting Europe around the 24th of May and it should continue up through the 27th. Experts are at a disagreement as to the affect it will have on air travel, but all agree there will at least be minor delays and rerouting of planes in the upcoming week. The eruption is also going to lower the temperatures in Europe which has been experiencing a warmer than normal spring. There will also be more rainfall throughout Europe during the next two weeks. For North America, spring is going to remain cool and last longer. It will likely lead to a short hot summer which will start around July instead of June. There is also a good likelihood of more rainfall. As to the long term effects of the ash plume, fall is going to be cooler than normal, and Winter will come early and be more intense. There will likely be more snowfall or rain than a normal winter which will last longer than a normal winter. Volcanic eruptions are also going to have a heavier impact on the weather due to this eruption as there is a stronger likelihood of ash plumes combining to bring more moisture over a longer distance.
